A pre-series variant of the updated Porsche Taycan lapped the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife in 7:07:55. Those figures make it quicker than the Tesla Model S, but could not break the record of the Rimac Nevera.
Porsche's test driver, Lars Kern, was the one behind the wheel of the car that was 26 seconds quicker than what the Taycan Turbo S, equipped with the Performance package, did back in August 2022, with the same driver at the helm. It was also 18 seconds quicker than the Tesla Model S Plaid. The facelifted Porsche Taycan was, though, 7 seconds behind the record holder Rimac Nevera. Keep in mind, that is a 1,888-horsepower (1,914-metric horsepower) hypercar.

The pre-series Porsche Taycan was 25 kph (15.5 mph) faster heading into the Schwedenkreuz, compared to the Taycan Turbo S in 2022. Furthermore, by the time Lars Kern crossed the finish line, set near the Grandstand 13 this time, he would have only just been passing the entrance to the Nordschleife, at the entry of the Antoniusbuche sector, during his drive in the Taycan one year and a four months ago.

All these figures recorded by the pre-series facelifted Taycan in the Green Hell put the German electric sedan in the same league as the electric hypercars. It may not be the quickest EV at the Nurburgring, but it is the quickest four-door EV ever to set wheels on that racetrack.

However, Porsche has not released any information on the pre-series variant that managed to achieve the exhilarating time. But the prominent rear wing and aggressively styled front fascia indicate that it should be the upcoming Taycan Turbo GT. It will be the first Porch GT-branded EV.

The GT prototype has previously tested around the Nordschleife. It should come with around 1,000 horsepower, generated by either a dual- or a tri-motor powertrain. The vehicle is expected to serve as the top-of-the-line variant in the Taycan lineup. The most potent Taycan right now is the Turbo S, rated at 752 horsepower (762 PS) and 774 lb-ft (1,050 Nm).

“Twenty-six seconds is half an eternity in motorsport,” says Kevin Geek, head of the Taycan model line. It was not the only lap that Lars Kern covered. He did several, and all of them were clocked at around the same time. The Nurburgring-Nordschleife was at the exclusive disposal of the Porsche team for the day.

Lars Kern said he pushed as hard as he could. The pre-series car that he drove featured a roll cage and racing bucket seats, equipment that will not be available for the street-legal version.

According to Porsche, a full onboard video of the fast lap will be published in mid-March 2024. That might be the exact time when the German carmaker will unveil the facelifted Taycan.
