It's been four years since assembly of the 992 generation Porsche 911 kicked off at the Zuffenhausen factory in Germany, and the automaker is currently preparing its mid-cycle update. The models will be internally known as the 992.2, and they will get the usual styling updates on the outside, a few tweaks made to the cabin, and some powertrain revisions.
The latest spy shots of the 992.2 family revolve around the 911 Targa. Our man with the cam caught an almost naked prototype of the sports car doing its thing on public roads, and you won't need a magnifying glass to spot the changes. Sure, they may be considered modest, but this is Porsche we're talking about, and they're not going to mess around with the design of the iconic 911, which has been around for 60 years.

A side-by-side comparison with its predecessor reveals the facelifted Porsche 911 Targa sports headlamps with different graphics. The automaker gave it a new front bumper, with side vents that appear to be a bit wider and a large sensor in the middle. The front hood carries over, and the side skirts and rear quarter panels are just as muscular. At the back, we can notice a full-width LED light bar, the Porsche emblem, and the logo revealing the model hidden beneath the vinyl stickers. The rear bumper is new, and the reflectors are shorter. The roof mechanism will be retained and save for probably new wheels, the profile will be identical.

These spy shots do not provide a glimpse of the cockpit, but previous scoops have revealed what we can expect from the 992.2. One of the biggest changes will be the introduction of a digital instrument cluster, a feature that might upset purists, but the 911 range is all about the future. Reports speak of an updated infotainment system, and they could round off the makeover with run-of-the-mill fresh upholstery and trim options, a new steering wheel, and perhaps an updated center console.

The current 992 family is powered by gasoline exclusively, and there are no electrified assemblies. However, that might change when the facelifted iteration launches and rumors speak of the Targa becoming the first model with partially electrified powertrains in the 60-year-long history of the 911 nameplate.

As you can guess, no one with no direct ties to the development of the sports car knows anything about the mill in question and the electric motor(s). And contrary to what some may think, a hybrid 911 wouldn't necessarily be about cutting down carbon dioxide emissions, but the added performance. The unveiling date is also unknown, though our spy photographers believe it might be due as early as this fall, in September.
