Knowing full well that they are facing one of the most competitive hot hatch markets ever, Peugeot is skipping the foreplay and getting down to business. Targeting the C-segment market where the Golf GTI and Focus ST reside, this latest French model promises to be one of the most interesting arrivals.
Nothing is known about the 308 R Concept, but these photos leaked ahead of the Frankfurt Motor Show debut do tell us quite a lot.

Since this model is branded an "R", we suspect it's powered not by a 2-liter engine, but by the 1.6-liter turbo making its debut on the RCZ R. This is rated at a very impressive 270 horsepower and 330 Nm of toruqe, the biggest output for this displacement.

"To get 270bhp and 330Nm of torque from a 1.6-litre engine and be resistant to sports use on the racetrack, it was necessary to introduce new high-performance, competitive solutions. Peugeot Sport has all the skills to do this. Research and Development teams brought together their experiences and expertise to ensure the sustainability of the car and its industrial application." Thierry Chauvet, Engine Development Manager for RCZ R.
However, almost every C-segment hot hatch uses a bigger 2-liter engine: Golf GTI/GTD, Megane RS, Focus ST, Civic Type R, Audi S3 and the Opel Astra OPC.

Beyond the engine used by French, which at the moment we can only speculate about, these photos do reveal a cool body kit. The 308 family hatch has been lowered, widened and been made more aggressive. It also features a two-tone paintjob with black covering the rear quarters and sporty red the front ones.

There is little doubt this is a production-intent concept. We'll know more in a few days when Peugeot spills the racing beans.
