As promised, Japanese automaker Mazda is treating visitors to this year’s New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) with its vision of what next-generation powertrain technologies. The first application of Mazda's new SKYACTIV-G gasoline engine combined with SKYACTIV transmissions will debut in the 2012 Mazda3 later this fall, a model that is also being showcased in New York these days.

As a fresh reminder, SKYACTIV includes completely redesigned, highly efficient, internal combustion gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and an advanced body and chassis.

“Together, these components will improve upon every aspect of the driving experience, including the vehicle's performance, handling, fuel economy and safety,”
the company explains in a statement for the press.

“Nearly one of every three Mazdas sold worldwide is a Mazda3, which, refreshed for 2012, receives the SKYACTIV powertrain as well as a refined interior and exterior design and new safety features,”
Mazda further added.

The automaker says the engine in the 2012 Mazda3 is a direct-injection 2.0-liter four-cylinder that will deliver a 15 percent improvement in fuel economy, while the transmission adds another four to seven percent.

The exterior of the car benefits from a redesigned front end that features stronger, more masculine features. The redesigned grille looks just as stylish as any concept car and is accentuated by new fog bezels and front headlamps. The changes at the back aren’t as aggressive, but the rear bumper will make your US-spec Mazda3 stand out for years to come. New sets of alloy wheels in 16-inch and 17-inch sizes round off the cosmetic changes for the 2012 model.

Comprehensive safety features are sure to include ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Emergency Stop Signaling system(ESS) as standard equipment and optional bi-xenon headlights with a pivoting adaptive front lighting system.
