Nissan to Reopen Leaf Reservations on May 1

After the higher then anticipated demand for the Leaf electric vehicle forced Japanese automaker Nissan to halt the reservation process in order to avoid further consumer discontent, things seem to have gotten back on track.

Nissan announced on Wednesday that, starting May 1, all those who planned to reserve a Leaf, but missed the opportunity a few months ago, will be able to make the first step towards making their dream a reality.

First, the customers in the states of Arizona, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and Washington will be able to place their reservations (Nissan warn that those who have registered on the Nissan Leaf website, some 340,000 people, will be given priority). Soon after, the order books will open in the southeastern United States.

To help boost the demand of the Leaf event further and fuel the new ordering campaign, Nissan announced the start of a new marketing campaign, one which includes the appearance of the Leaf in the "Revenge of the Electric Car" documentary, which opens April 22. The marketing campaign is titled “Value of Zero” and will include other advertising means and mediums as well. Hopefully, the campaign will manage to explain why there still is a big delay from the moment when a customer places an order for the car until he actually receives it.

"Nissan is pleased to report that the first vessel carrying post earthquake-produced Nissan LEAFs is scheduled to arrive to U.S. shores April 27," said Carlos Tavares, chairman Nissan Americas. "Nissan LEAF deliveries are about to grow from the few hundreds, to the many thousands, and all current customer orders will be fulfilled by the end of this summer."
