Nissan LEAF’s Connect System Wins GSMA Award

It has been announced today that the Nissan LEAF’s system that is being marketed as the Nissan Connect, powered by CARWINGS has been awarded the Global Mobile Awards 2011 prize for the “Best Mobile Innovation for Automotive and Transport” at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The “Information and Communication Technology system (ICT) for electric vehicles” won the award that highlights the best achievements and innovations in mobile communications.

The telematics provided by the onboard system in the all-new LEAFs come as standard with the car, which launched in Japan and the United States in December 2010 and will go on sale in Europe this quarter. ICT delivers convenience, comfort and security for Nissan LEAF owners, as well as providing real-world data that is important to realizing a low-carbon society in the near future.

Thanks to the new system, LEAF owners are connected to the data and information they need to optimize their electric transportation experience. Via the onboard Telematics Communication Unit (TCU), the car communicates wirelessly to the NISSAN CARWINGS Data Center, an information control service provided by the manufacturer. Unique features include usage history and battery conditions, while remote control for battery charging and climate control is also available. Through a dedicated website for LEAF owners, the information can be accessed online from most mobile phones, smart phones and computers.

The networking services for Nissan LEAFs are provided by AT&T, NTT DOCOMO, INC., and Telenor Connexion in the United States, Japan and Europe respectively, providing the electric car’s onboard communication unit with the data from the NISSAN CARWINGS Center.
