Nissan have just showcased a self-driving version of their Leaf, at the Combined Exhibition of Advanced Technologies (CEATEC), an annual technology trade show, from Japan. The NSC-2015 prototype shows off its fully-automated parking capabilities, which it achieves with the use of an all-round view camera, which transmits its data the 4G telecommunications network.
The way it works is the driver gets out of the car, and then it immediately starts searching for a parking spot, and identifies its surroundings. When a suitably large space is detected, it will automatically park itself with extreme accuracy.
The prototype is controlled via a smartphone, with which it can later be commanded to exit said parking spot, and ‘await further instructions’. Also, when parked, the same camera which was used for parking is then used to keep an eye out for ‘suspicious activity’, and if it does detect it, the driver will be alerted, via the same mobile phone network.
This is just the first car of its kind, displayed by Nissan, and the technology will be steadily improved and refined, until it is deemed safe enough to be let lose on the public roads - probably in 2015, as its name suggests.
