Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit is almost ready to host the season opener of the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship, with Nissan’s both competing racing teams having high hopes for this year.
Nissan entered the GT1 category last year, managing to secure certain Championship and Qualifying victories, as well as podium finishes, with the company aiming to fight at a higher level this year.
In 2011, the company’s GT1 offensive includes four GT-Rs, run by two teams: the returning Sumo Power GT, and new team JRM Racing, that replace Swiss Team Racing from last year.
As for the driver line-up, this brings experienced players to the game. For the JRM Racing team, Peter Dumbreck, who raced for the Sumo Power GT team in 2010, will share the No. 22 car with British driver Richard Westbrook, who competed for the GT1 Matech Ford team last year. As for the No. 23 car, this will be driven by Germans Michael Krumm, who partnered Dumbreck last year and Lucas Luhr, who will be making his GT1 debut, coming with multiple American Le Mans Series titles.
It’s now time to move on to the Sumo Power GT Team, where Brazilian ex-Formula One duo Ricardo Zonta and Enrique Bernoldi will manhandle the No. 20 car, with both racers having driven in the GT1 series for Reiter Lamborghini and Vitaphone Maserati respectively (2010). The No. 21 car will allow Jamie Campbell-Walter to return for a second season and will also be driven by Australian David Brabham, who holds two ALMS titles.
