Nissan to Become Official Vehicle Supplier for FIA GT1 World Championship

FIA GT1 Nissan GT-R2010 FiA GT1 World Championship
Nissan will be the Official Vehicle Supplier for the new FIA GT1 World Championship for the inaugural 2010 season with a further option for next year’s season.

The Japanese carmaker has reached an agreement with SRO Motorsports Group (SRO), the promoters of the event, which will see it supply four cars for each SRO event, with one of its high performance vehicles taking the Official Safety Car role at each event.

The FIA GT1 World Championship replaces the FIA GT Championship and has been approved by the FIA as a full world championship. Its 2010 season will visit ten countries on four continents and will see iconic brands like Aston Martin, Corvette, Ford, Lamborghini, Maserati and Nissan compete against each other.

This year’s season debuts at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi on April 17 and ends at the San Luis circuit in Argentina, on December 5. It will feature two, 2-car Nissan GT-R teams: the Sumo Power (UK) and the Swiss Racing Team (Switzerland), marking Nissan’s comeback into an official FIA World Championship after more than 20 years.

At Nissan the idea of the FIA GT1 World Championship is a very exciting one, seeing the GT-R on track in competition with these other world famous brands will be spectacular. With the strong global Television exposure in place we are sure that this agreement will be a key to us further enhancing the reputation and stature of Nissan's high-performance cars. It also gives us added exposure away from the on-track action as we look to reinforce the Nissan brand within this core car-loving audience on a global basis,” said Soichi Miyatani, NISMO (the carmaker’s racing division) President and Nissan Corporate Vice President said.
