When the first-generation Toyota Prius appeared it was enough that it was a hybrid to be different. But now, with so many hybrids around, the Prius needs a revolutionary redesign. At least that’s what Toyota’s brand design chief says.
After the first-generation Prius, which looked like a plain Japanese car, the vehicle adopted its instant-recognizable triangular silhouette that we know as the “liftback.” The shape, enabling the vehicle to be vey air-slippery at speeds, remained the same for two generations, the Prius receiving only rear and front redesigned parts.

However, speaking with Automotive News, Toyota’s brand global design chief Simon Humphries revealed that the fourth-generation Prius will come with a radical design.

"It has to be a revolution this time around," Simon said. "The last redesign was evolutionary, and when stylists try two evolutionary designs in a row, he said, "things go wrong. That's kind of like an unwritten rule."

As Toyota offers a hybrid powertrain in almost every model in its lineup, the company wants to make the Prius a more emotional, fun-to-drive hybrid car. Maybe even sportier, as Mr. Satoshi Ogiso explained earlier.
