Now that the new Leon is out on the market, enthusiasts are eager to find out more about the Cupra version, despite the fact that this isn’t exactly close to its release.
The hot hatch segment has been involved in a Power War of its own, with each new generation bringing higher outputs, but it seems that the increasing eco pressure has pushed SEAT to stop upping the ante on the power front and look at other ways to improve performance.
The new Cupra could even offer less than the 260 hp of the outgoing Cupra R, using a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, but the vehicle will be significantly lighter, which should allow it to at least match the performance of the vehicle on sale now.
As for the handling, the new model with come with wider tracks, which should allow it to make a step further towards pleasing the driver.
One of the most important changes is that SEAT is planing to give us the Leon in three forms: the SC (3-door hatchback), the five-door hatch, as well as the ST (wagon). All three will have Cupra versions, with the last one set to compete with the Ford Focus ST Estate. The new SEAT Leon Cupra will be launched by the first quarter of 2014, but we’ll certainly find out more about it by then.
