New Schuco BMW Miniatures Coming

Fans of the cars produced by German manufacturer BMW can soon take their passion to a new level, as the carmaker, together with toy manufacturer Schuco teaned up to create exact miniatures of models like X1, 5 Series GT, 5 Series Touring and X6.

The miniatures are manufactured in Dongguan, China and involve a carefully elaborated production process. BMW prides itself as being the single carmaker who requires the hoods on their miniatures to open and show the replica of the real engines fitted on the vehicles.

The miniatures are being manufactured by respecting the sizes of the real models, being scaled down from the original drawings. It takes six to eight weeks to produce an epoxy resin prototype, twice as big as the miniature which it will spawn.

“It’s easy to make changes at prototype stage, because the casting mold has not yet been finalized,” Schuco’s Senior Product Manager, Michael Baumgartner said according to BMWblog. "These last-minute changes are an additional challenge, of course, but our Schuco specialists can cope.”

The BMW miniature models have been in the works at Schuco for over a year, with the first four models being ready for inspection this July. BMW gave the green light for production at the end of the same month, a little over a year since the creation of the miniatures began.

There's no official date set for the BMW 5 Sedan and Touring models to become available, but the toy maker says that will happen soon. And they promise the miniatures will be worth while.

“We always set out consciously to go that bit further than our competitors,” Baumgartner added.
