Bugatti’s latest bespoke commission is this new Chiron Super Sport ‘57 One of One’ model, built to capture the essence of the iconic Type 57 SC Atlantic. As we speak, this car is being driven across the scenic routes of the American West by a 70-year-old Bugatti superfan. Yes, seriously.
Every time Bugatti comes out with a new Chiron edition, we just can’t help but be impressed by the sheer excellence of what those people in Molsheim managed to do as an encore to the Veyron. It’s beautiful, it’s exclusive, and it’s faster than any land vehicle should ever be.
The story behind this latest Super Sport commission, dubbed the ‘57 One of One’ is quite heartwarming. It’s about a Bugatti customer who fell in love with the original Type 57 SC Atlantic the very first time she saw it, and eventually went on to order a bespoke Chiron of her own.
Of course, this took a bit of doing, because the carmaker’s lead designer, Jascha Straub, wanted this new car to feature the exact same color the customer saw on that original Type 57 all those years ago, so that every time she saw the car, she would feel the same emotion that she felt during that faithful day.
“I flew to Bilbao, with a color swatch that we had created, to observe the paintwork under different light conditions. It needed to be completely authentic to the original,” explained Straub.
But getting the color right was just half the story. This is not a regular Chiron Super Sport with a bespoke color scheme. If you look closely, you’ll notice that it features a new grille with polished vertical lines and a thicker center spine. Other visual highlights include the dual-tone five-spoke wheels (blue & polished chrome), while the underside of the rear wing features a hand-drawn silhouette of the Atlantic.
As for the interior, that’s where you’ll find the ‘Gaucho’ leather upholstery, the Atlantic’s silhouette hand-stitched in ‘Lightning Blue’ on the door panels, a custom center console inlay with ‘57 One of One’, plus the iconic ‘Dancing Elephant’ sculpture of Rembrandt Bugatti embroidered on the headrests.
This is a “breath-taking new chapter in the legend of the Type 57 SC Atlantic; authentic, beautiful and formed in the spirit of Jean Bugatti’s original,” added Bugatti exec Hendrik Malinowski.
Normally, this type of car would have been destined to live out its life on various concours lawns during automotive shows. And it will still do that. However, the fact that its owner is genuinely interested in driving it speaks volumes about her passion for the brand.
In terms of performance, the Chiron Super Sport is powered by a quad-turbocharged W16 masterpiece, producing 1,575 horsepower. In a straight line, this car will max out at 273 mph (440 kph). Enough said.
