The long-awaited new Land Rover Defender has made its debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, as well as a secret event in a forest somewhere. Two body styles have already been presented, the short 3-door and the normal 5-door, just as we expected.
We know there's a third coming, which is an extended model designed to seat up to seven people. But the thing is, people might want a pickup as well. This used to be one of the first jobs of a Land Rover vehicle, to serve the sheep farmers of rural Britain with its 4x4 skills, carrying supplies or even animals. It also carried the Hulk to fat Thor in Avengers: Endgame, if we remember correctly.
But probably the first thing I remember about this type of model was a really old show called "A 4x4 Is Born" by a veterinarian called Mark Evans in which he custom-made his own and spent a small fortune. It was probably one of the first car shows I ever watched and it revealed how easy this thing was to work on.
The new Land Rover is probably nothing like that; it's electric everything with more efficient but also complex modern engines. It's also got aluminum unibody construction for lightness, plus available air suspension with independent arms. But at least the design is all vintage - a mix of circles and squares.
Land Rover probably can't magically turn it into a body-on-frame pickup. And who would even buy a short truck for around €45,000 when they can just get a Hilux or even a van? But many companies are looking into car-like pickups and have even shown concepts. We're talking about you, Volkswagen and Hyundai.
We think the normal Defender is rugged enough as it is. You can put 900kg of stuff in the rubberized trunk, put another 300kg on the roof or tow 3.5 tons of camper/boat.
What would that even look like, a 2020 Defender pickup? Well, we don't even need to use our imagination because such a thing has been rendered by X-Tomi Design.
