At the 2012 edition of the Nevada Open Road Challenge, which took place on May 20th, a 2006 NASCAR Dodge Charger, driven by Jim Peruto clocked an amazing 217.56mph over 90 miles of highway in the Silver State. What’s more, over a particularly fast stretch of road he clocked over 240 mph.
To put this into perspective, this is the sort of speed that light aircraft cruise at. At 240 miles per hour, you’re traveling the length of a football pitch every second. You could also circle the whole planet at the equator in just over 33 hours provided you don’t run out of fuel.
This sort of speed is fine on an inclosed track, but like the Isle of Man race, this road rally is very dangerous due to the inconsistency of the road surface.
