Launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, the 720S isn’t showing its age even though McLaren is working on the long-tailed 750LT for 2020. The MSO Apex Collection is yet another testament to how customizable the mid-engine supercar is, a limited edition of which only 15 units will be made for European customers.
These babies pay tribute to five racing circuits where McLaren has enjoyed on-track success, all of them in Europe. The countries where the Grands Prix in question are held are the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Belgium, and the starting price for the Apex is £288,813 before any optional extras.
The price includes a VIP experience at the track, but on the other hand, it’s best to remember the bog-standard 720S costs £208,600. That’s a difference of 80,213 pounds sterling, which might come as a fair bit of money for most people. The typical 720S customer isn’t one of them, and that’s that.
Obviously enough, the cars are called Apex Great Britain, Apex France, Apex Germany, Apex Italy, and Apex Belgium. These themes are split in six right-hand-drive cars and nine left-hand drive, and all of them feature the MSO Track Pack along with MSO Bespoke content for the interior and exterior.
Upon opening the dihedral doors, you’re presented with extended side sills in carbon fiber adorned with the apex speed of the fastest corner of the Grand Prix circuit of your choice. The British specification reads 110 miles per hour, which works out at 177 km/h for the remainder of the Old Continent.
The 720S is a lot faster than that, but also quick! McLaren quotes 2.9 seconds to 100 km/h (62 mph) and a maximum speed of 341 km/h (212 mph) while the quarter-mile time of 10.3 seconds is thoroughly impressive by all accounts. For reference, the purpose-built Dodge Challenger SRT Demon can finish in the high nines with a perfect launch and no modifications to the car.
If you were wondering what the VIP experience includes, prepare for a paddock pass and the Pirelli Hot Laps. The latter consists of a high-speed passenger lap in a McLaren with a professional driver at the wheel, and the British automaker promises the lucky ones they’ll experience for themselves “how the apex speed is achieved.”
