Back in 2003, BMW decided to create the M Award as a token of cognizance for the rider with the best results in qualifying on the starting grid during a championship.
Since then, each year, the rider with the best qualifying points in a season gets a brand new BMW M car. The prize for the best qualifier of the 2015 championship is an M6 Convertible, a beast that can summon 560 horsepower from the M TwinPower Turbo V8 petrol engine under the hood. The ride reaches 100 km/h (62 mph) in an impressive 4.3 seconds but has a top speed limited electronically to 250 km/h (155 km/h).

"The new BMW M6 Convertible for this year’s BMW M Award winner is also visually stunning. In its exclusive BMW Individual paint finish “Frozen Blue Metallic”, the convertible looks both ultra-dynamic and extremely elegant. This imposing appearance is reinforced by the Double-spoke style 20-inch BMW M light alloy wheels. The interior features BMW Individual full fine-grain Merino leather in “Opal White”, as well as BMW Individual interior trims in “Ash Grain White” real wood," official BMW sources say.

Stoner and Rossi lead the ranks with three M Awards each

This year BMW will present its 13th M Award. It's been no less than 17 years since BMW became the "Official Car of MotoGP", and the fleet has also grown to include six BMW M and M Performance models. BMW M4 Coupe, BMW M3 and BMW M6 Gran Coupe are Safety Cars, while the Safety Officer uses a BMW M5.

A new BMW X5 M and the BMW M550d xDrive Touring are used as Medical Cars, alongside two S1000RR motorcycles as Safety Bikes.

The most successful MotoGP riders are Casey Stoner and Valentino Rossi, who received three M Awards each. Next in line are Jorge Lorenzo and Marc Marquez, with two awards each. Marquez became the youngest rider ever to win the BMW M Award and the first rider to win it in the rookie premier class season. The remaining two M Awards went to Nicky Hayden and Sete Gibernau.

Points are earned in a system similar to that of the championship, 25 points for the pole, 20 for the second position, 16 for the third, and so on. Marquez currently leads the M Awards chart with 86 points, followed by Dovizioso (63), Lorenzo (62), Iannone (54) and Aleix Espargaro (43). Former winner Rossi is sixth with 40 points.
