Lorenzo Celebrates His 28th Birthday with Flawless Victory at Jerez

Jerez became Lorenzoland once more, as the Yamaha rider who, by the way, turns 28 today, claimed a flawless victory from pole position. Lorenzo had a tremendous weekend and authoritatively dominated the free practice and qualifying sessions. He also raised the bar for the Jerez track, setting new records and proving that people had a good reason for using his name for the final turn.

Lorenzo started from pole and darted ahead from the get go, but Marquez, riding with a fractured and recently operated left little finger, would not simply let go. The reigning champion made his utmost best to keep as close to the leader as possible and managed to finish the race with a very decent 5.5 seconds gap.

Chasing him and hoping to repeat the scenario in Argentina a fortnight ago, Valentino Rossi also rode very hard and even got 1 second behind Marquez. However, his front tire started to wear out, and Rossi understood that he had to take things more easily. Nevertheless, his finish in the third position got him his 200th podium of the career, and he thus became the first rider to ever do so.

Crutchlow maintains solid pace with CWM LCR Honda

Cal Crutchlow secured another great result, as he finished fourth in Jerez. It's now obvious that his LCR Honda feels better and better. Crutchlow battled his way past the Espargaro brothers and managed to maintain a decent gap from Pol. Still affected by the flu, the Manx rider thought the fourth position was a good one and refrained from pushing harder to chase Rossi.

The younger Espargaro completed the top five, followed by Andrea Iannone, who had a late start and two subsequent laps which caused him to lose valuable places in the debut of the race. His teammate Andrea Dovizioso only arrived 9th after making several errors.

Suzuki's Aleix Espargaro was 7th, followed by Bradley Smith while Pramac Ducati's Hernandez completed top ten. Aleix' teammate Maverick Vinales was 11th, with Scott Redding posting a rather modest 13th-fastest time.

Aoyama, Baz, and Abraham did not finish the race, with Dani Pedrosa's substitute (Aoyama) crashing hard, but without being injured.

Rossi still leads the championship with 82 points, extending his lead over Dovizioso (67), while Lorenzo now has 62 points, 6 more than Marquez. Iannone is fifth with 50 points, leading Crutchlow by 3. Racing action resumes on May 17th at Le Mans in France.
