Di Montezemolo said in an interview with Italy’s Gazzetta dello Sport that he believes Alonso’s personality fits better with Ferrari’s inside atmosphere. The Italian wanted to thank Kimi Raikkonen as well, for their open and successful partnership that conceived two Constructor’s Championship titles (2007, 2008) and a Driver’s title for the Finn in 2007.
"It's a matter of personality, because Kimi is the type of person that shows little emotion, he keeps everything inside. These things don't help with the exchange of information inside the team. In any case I'm thankful to Raikkonen - he brought us a championship that we will not forget,” said Ferrari’s boss.
Luca di Monetzemolo continued praising his team’s new acquisition, revealing both he and Stefano Domenicali hold Alonso in high regards and that in the past months several people asked him when is Alonso going to join the Maranello outfit.
“We needed a team player, and I think Alonso is that, considering also all the good things our team boss, [Stefano] Domenicali, has told me about him. But it's also up to us not to make mistakes. Fernando is a great driver and a charismatic man, I expect a lot from him."
"For months people on the street have approached me to ask me: 'when will you hire Alonso?' I can recall such levels of enthusiasm only before the deal with [Michael] Schumacher, many years ago,” added Luca di Montezemolo.
Di Montezemolo showed his enthusiast about his future drivers line-up, confident an all-latin pairing would prove to be the winning hand for the Italian Formula One team.
“Have you seen what kind of race he did at Singapore last Sunday? It was exhilarating! Alonso and [Felipe] Massa will be a great pairing, an all-latin pairing. I believe very much in Felipe's recovery,” concluded Ferrari’s chairman.
