Monoform Concept Draws a Line Towards Urban Minimal Design

The Royal College of Art presented the Monoform as a wakeup signal at the automotive indusrty’s lack of cultural relevance. Automobiles design is heading towards more minimalistic lines each and every day, signifying a conclusive facet of science and industrialization of the world.

As a whole, the automotive industry has been based on age-old purist lines of aesthetics and perfection. Now taking this broader socio-cultural aspect into consideration, one may argue that perhaps the progression of automobile design has not strictly transcended to a purely artistic level.

Designer Fernando Ocana has sought to fuse all such elements into a singular form, to create a vehicle concept from an artists perspective. The Monoform car concept design may seem uniquely refined to some, while incomprehensible to others. Without a doubt, the designers idea was to convey a message by breaking the barriers of conservative design applied to modern vehicles.

The Monoform Concept is reaching for cubism in its purest form combined with a certain form of fluidity that is given by the top section. Fernando Ocana conceived the vehicle as an urban mix between driver and the city. Its irregular glass facade would also act as a definitive point of interaction between the car and the urban landscape. The broken reflections of the city created by the facade would create a unique dynamism. It might not be suitable for the purist tastes of the majority of petrol heads due to its futurist looks.

Without a doubt it does manage to break the rules in matter of design with it’s bold finish, and perhaps would work in the future, as part of the plain urban scenery.
