Mitsubishi used to be known across the world not for their crossovers and hybrids, but for cars like the Evo, the Eclipse and the smaller sportscars like the Starion. All that history, gone!
At the 2012 Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) held in Sydney, the company’s global president Osamu Masuki, said that Mitsubishi that even though the engineers are very keen on making such a car again, there’s no plan for a small rear-wheel drive sports coupe.
“Our engineers are very, very keen to make that (sports car). Our engineers are very prominent to investigate new technologies, but to use that technology they are not that good to bring the revenue or make money,” he said. “We have to identify if it is really feasible economically, we are thinking of just sharing just one platform to achieve various models.”
Mitshubishi’s Evo will become a hybrid, the Eclipse has been killed and the rest of their cars are... boring. Meanwhile, Toyota is planning three sportscars in total, one cheaper and simpler than the GT 86/ FR-S and another one likely to be AWD and hybrid. Maybe the Big T sees a market for ‘fun’ that Mitsubishi can’t afford to enter!
