With the third-generation MINI, it’s not hard to understand that most customers go for the 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines. The One, as it happens, is seen as the ugly duckling of the lot, the least desirable MINI currently on sale, but the British automaker plans to turn things around with the UK-only 1499 GT.
“1499 GT” what now? The 1499 in the special-edition model’s name suggests that production is limited to 1,499 examples. GT, meanwhile, harks back to the 1275 GT from 1969. Developed as a replacement for the replacement for Cooper with the 998-cc engine.

And from 1971 onward, it also acted as a replacement for the Cooper S. The most redeeming feature of the 1275 GT not counting for the side decals? It was the first Mini to come with a tachometer.

Now that the history lesson is over, take a look at the 1499 GT, including the gold decals that contrast beautifully with the Midnight Black paint. It definitely looks special for a MINI One, and that’s only natural considering that this fellow gets the John Cooper Works body kit and 17-inch JCW wheels.

Opening the door, you’re welcomed by JCW everything. Sports seats, leather upholstery with red accents, gloss black trim on the dashboard, it’s a smart cabin alright! Exclusively offered in three-door configuration, the 1499 GT starts at £16,990, making it £600 more expensive than the 2017 MINI Cooper.

Arriving in British dealerships this November, the MINI One 1499 GT hides a 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder under the hood. A member of the BMW B38 engine family, the B38A12U0 develops 101 horsepower (75 kW) and 180 Nm (133 pound-feet) of torque between 1,400 and 4,000 rpm.

When connected to the six-speed manual transmission, the 1499 GT is both frugal and adequately fast. Zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) is doable in 9.9 seconds, and top speed stands at 121 mph (195 km/h).

Customers can get the 1499 GT in Pepper White, but this exterior color comes with black decals graphics whether you like it or not.
