MG Zero Concept Debuts in Beijing

The Auto China 2010 Beijing will host the premiere of a British-designed concept, the MG Zero. The car previews what is expected to become the brand’s future supermini.

The concept is the work of MG design director Anthony Williams, who has conceived the car to appeal to the so-called 'G-90s', people aged between 18 and 28. The Zero refers to the design ideals referred to by MG as "zero restraint, zero distance and zero limit". MG makers say the Zero has the sportiest exterior than any MG, plus the most fashionable interior.

Being a concept car, it is clear that it won’t make it to the production line as it is now. There are many design flourishes that will most likely not appear on the production model, including interior lighting that changes according to the music playing in the car and rear light glass which can be used to play video games and draw paintings on.

According to Autocar magazine, the MG Zero is expected to go on sale in the UK badged as MG3. As for the hatchback version of the Roewe 350, that was unveiled at the Beijing motor show last week, the future is yet not clear. Roewe executives are said to be concerned that the car would be too close in size to the MG6 to offer a sufficient alternative.

The MG brand is owned by Chinese company SAIC, which also owns the assets of the former MG Rover company. The Rover brand rights are however owned by Tata Motors, so the cars are sold by SAIC under the Roewe brand.
