Since the BMW 3 Series is, and always was, the benchmark for compact luxury sedans, Mercedes-Benz decided it was time, once and for all, to try and claim the number one spot in this segment.

Their latest plan is to release 2 new models to stack up against BMW's 3 Series Convertible and Touring versions, since the C-Class is offered only in Sedan and Coupe versions, for the moment.

Furthermore, the Stuttgart based company plans to offer some new diesel engines too for the C-Class in the US. However, BMW is already one step ahead of MB. The cars Daimler is planning to overthrow are already moving into a new era.

The Sedan and Touring versions will continue to be sold under the 3 Series badge but the Convertible and Coupe will transgress into the 4 Series starting with this year. That means that Mercedes will have to rethink its cars, once again.

According to Automotive News, the new C-Class Sedan will be launched in 2014 at the NAIAS and all the other variations will start coming out towards 2015, along with diesel engines and all-wheel-drive systems.

“We were fighting the 3 series with two arms tied behind our back, and now we will change that," Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Steve Cannon told Automotive News.

The new cars will be built at the same plants as the ones being commercialized today, at the Tuscaloosa plant in Alabama.
