If you feel like you've missed your chance to become a racing driver and have €198,850 ($233,846) excluding VAT burning a hole in your pocket, then Mercedes-AMG has what you need.
You're looking at it. It's the Mercedes-AMG GT4 customer race car, a vehicle based on the excellent Mercedes-AMG GT R road car that's slightly more extreme despite having less power. How's that? "In every area where the production specification could mean a compromise for racing purposes, it is replaced by racing technology for the Mercedes-AMG GT4."
The GT4 has already had plenty of testing done, with the most grueling trial being the 30-hour endurance test at the Lausitzring. In all, the program managed to clock over 30,000 kilometers (18,650 miles) of track testing, a number which is going to grow by the end of this weekend after the Mercedes-AMG GT4's outing on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife.
Even though it will sit on the grid and race together with the rest of the clubsport race series participants, the GT4 won't be competing. Instead, its sole purpose is to gather some more race conditions data before the first deliveries of the car start toward the end of the year.
The Mercedes-AMG GT4 uses the same 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine as the road-going versions, but here it is tuned to just 510 hp (the same as in the S and 75 hp less than in the R version). It also has less torque - up to 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) - than the standard GT, but it more than makes up for it with its lower weight and improved aerodynamics.
“I am looking forward to the first test outing of the Mercedes-AMG GT4 at the Nordschleife in racing conditions," said Stefan Wendl, head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing ahead of the event. "This is the next step in our comprehensive test and development program. In the process, we are working together with long-standing partners and teams who are running our cars. Thus, we are not only collecting further technical insights, but also feedback from the various drivers which we can still incorporate into the car. Before we can deliver the first Mercedes-AMG GT4, we will carry out some more of these tests in racing conditions. Not only at the Nordschleife, but also internationally and with various teams.”
