2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 Prototype Reveals Panamericana Grille and LED Headlights

The first all-new incarnation of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class since the 1979 original is almost ready to be taken out of the oven. And, as power-greedy aficionados will be thrilled to notice, the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 continues to reveal itself bit by bit.

The latest prototype sighting allows us to notice the vertical slats of the German automaker's famous Panamericana grille underneath the faux bits covering the nose of the car.

Some might expect the Panamericana grille to be a special feature reserved for the G65 limited edition. Nevertheless, since, for instance, we've recently shown you a 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 sporting a similar visual feature, such a conclusion would be wrong.

This prototype also shows the all-LED front and rear lights - while the classic shape of the clusters has remained nearly untouched, the all-new tech inside will make for a sweet mix.

Returning to the striptease process mentioned in the intro, we'll remind you that, back in June, we were able to take a peek inside the cabin of the new G63.

From the increased cabin width, to the E-Class Coupe-like air conditioning vents, there are quite a lot of features that will make life inside the W464 G-Class much nicer.

On the tech front, the G63 will ditch the current twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8 in favor of the M177 twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8. While the unit delivers up to 612 hp and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) on the E63 S 4Matic+, we should see the output dropping slightly below the 600 hp mark for the Gelandewagen.

Nevertheless, the most important question revolving around the hardware changes brought by the new generation revolves around the front differential lock - will the new multi-link front axle see the G-Class losing the said feature?

Since the newcomer is expected to lose up to 400 kg (make that 880 lbs) compared to the current car, offroading enthusiasts might want to look away now - the answer could be "yes".

On the upside, the extra muscle and the hefty diet could see the 2019 Mercedes-AMG G63 rivaling the (base) Porsche 911 0 to 60 mph sprint time.

With the non-Affalterbach incarnations of the second-gen G-Class set to land by the end of the year, we should see the G63 landing a few months later, with the uber-offroader probably coming to the US as a 2019 model.
