There's a new kid on the Mercedes block and a very important one. It's called the CLE, and it replaces the two-door versions of the old C- and E-Class. And even though it is closer to the latter in terms of size, it should throw a direct punch at the BMW 4 Series and Audi A5 instead of the 8er and A7, respectively.
Shown to the world in a premiere last week, the first-ever Mercedes CLE family will be topped by a pair of AMG variants. These will be the 53 and the 63 models, with the latter dwarfing every other version in terms of performance and pricing (unless they launch an even punchier one). But what will power it? Probably an electrified 2.0-liter four-pot.
If that recipe sounds familiar, it is because the new C 63 S E Performance uses it. The 2.0-liter turbo'd four-cylinder engine with electric assistance is certainly not as exciting as the old car's bi-turbo V8, but it is very potent. It churns out a maximum of 670 hp (680 ps/500 kW) and has 752 pound-feet (1,020 Nm) of torque to play with. The BMW M3 rival needs 3.4 seconds from 0-62 mph (0-100 kph) and tops out at 174 mph (280 kph).
It would make sense to use this powertrain on the upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63, though not everyone is convinced by that. In fact, certain outlets state that it will get a larger mill, namely the 3.0-liter six-banger, also with electric assistance, which will be shared with the next-gen E 63 lineup. We wouldn't hold our breath for an electrified six-pot, as we think the four-banger mentioned above would suit it better. Plus, it should also be less thirsty than the E 63's assembly.
It will be a while until we find out exactly what Mercedes-AMG has in store for the CLE 63, as the model is expected to be introduced sometime next year. Thus, unless the Affalterbach sub-brand steps forward and releases the juicy details ahead of the grand unveiling, we're probably a few months away from learning how powerful and fast it is. Design-wise, we already know what to expect, and that's sportier front and rear bumpers, the Panamericana grille, four tailpipes, and exclusive wheels.
We've already caught a few unofficial glimpses of the car via the rendering world, and another one imagines it in all-black duds. Ildar_project on Instagram gave it a monochromatic look with a satin twist, joined by smoked headlamps and windows with a small amount of tint for some well-deserved privacy. The car rides on large alloys and sports an imposing grille up front with vertical slats, and we've got to admit that this look suits it very well. If anything, it's prettier than that unofficial red copy we've seen recently, isn't it?
