Even in the Land Down Under, there’s a case to be made for hot hatchbacks and hot sedans. Mercedes-AMG has got this segment covered with the A 35 4Matic until the 45 series comes along, and pricing for the most affordable model is $67,200 in this part of the world.
The sedan is a bit more expensive at $69,800 excluding delivery fee and on-road costs. Deliveries are scheduled to start next month for the hatchback while the sedan is expected at dealerships in October 2019 for the 2020 model year. As expected of Mercedes-AMG, the Edition 1 will be offered in the first year on sale with lots of upgrades.

In the case of the hatchback, the $6,990 package adds AMG Performance seats, Black and Magma Grey upholstery, polished aluminum trim here and there, Denim Blue metallic paintwork and gold accents, 19-inch AMG multi-spoke wheels, and the AMG aerodynamic package. Looking at the bigger picture, it’s a lot of additional equipment.

A 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine powers both the hatch and three-box model, churning out more than 300 horsepower and a meaty 295 pound-feet (400 Nm) of torque to all four wheels. A seven-speed DCT sends the suck-squeeze-bang-blow to both axles, allowing the car to hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.7 seconds in perfect launch conditions. As for the top end, the maximum velocity of the 35 series is 250 km/h (155 mph).

If you want even more performance but don’t want to spend a ludicrous amount of money on the 45, don’t forget that the Corvette has entered the eighth generation with almost 500 horsepower and a good ol’ small-block V8 in the middle of the car. The mid-engine ‘Vette will be offered with right-hand drive, and yes, that means Australia will get it too.

A straight conversion from $60,000 in U.S. dollars to Australian dollars translates to $88,575, and straight off the bat, it’s crystal clear that General Motors will price the C8 at more than $100,000 in the Land Down Under. But even at this price point, you’re getting the best performance for your buck!
