This year saw McLaren add some new bits and bobs to the MP4-12C then rebaptized it 650S. In addition to this slightly misfortunate marketing move, McLaren goes as it again with the 625C. Don't be fooled by its name - it's just a rebranded 650S for no obvious reason that will be sold only in select Asian markets.
As funny as it sounds, the Brits tell the "regionally tailored" car "offers the greatest level of refinement of any McLaren model to date," which is a bit wrong considering there's a P1 in the lineup as well. As it happens, engineers set up the 625C to be more usable on a day-to-day basis through revisions of the ProActive Chassis Control, suspension and such.
While 'C' stands for 'Club', the 625C is, get this, less powerful than the 650S. Yes, we're not joking. As its name implies, the 650S produces 650 horsepower from its 3.8-liter in-house developed twin-turbo V8, but the Asia-only 625C happens to produce 625 of them ponies. The deficit in oomph translates to a 3.1-second 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run, a tenth slower than that of the 650S. That's not cool at all.
Nevertheless, top speed and emissions remain the same with the 650S at 333 km/h (207 mph) for the Coupe and 329 km/h (204 mph) for the Spider and 275 grams of CO2 per km, respectively. Other notable differences between the two siblings comprise of new dampers and less stiff spring rate at the rear.
McLaren informs the 625C will be initially launched in Hong Kong, with the Coupe and Spider both immediately available. Selected other markets from Asia will be announced in the following months.
