You can figure out exactly how distinctive a car is from the amount of stuff suppliers create specifically for it. Sure, we didn't need any confirmation of the fact that the new Miata is as interesting as they come, but Bose insisted on making that even more noticeable.
It goes without saying that Mazda's MX-5 is at its best when driven with the roof down. But when that happens, the audio quality in the cockpit tends to take a dive, which is not ideal when your favorite tune just came up on the radio.

Mazda says "cabin acoustics in the MX-5 differ significantly depending on roof position." In other words, when the top is down, sound clarity and musical detail start to fade because the ambient noise it too loud.

This is the moment when Bose interferes and clears the air... literally, with new speakers added to the driver and passenger seat headrests. Here's what Bose have to say about their Miata-bound sound system:

“[...] So, we wanted to make the sound system for the new MX-5 better than it’s ever been. We improved audio quality, and for open-air driving, the experience is thrilling. You’ll feel and hear the difference the first time you listen,” said Marc Mansell, vice president, Bose Automotive Systems Division.

Sure, we'll give it a try, but first, let us tell you what hardware lies behind those claims. In essence, the system adds a pair of 2-inch (50 mm) Bose UltraNearfield speakers with TrueSpace technology to the headrests.

Moreover, the audio setup uses two 6.5-inch (165 mm) speakers found in the doors. These are teamed-up with 1-inch (25 mm) tweeters inserted in the A-pillars, a seven-channel digital amplifier plus a 5.25-inch (130 mm) woofer working from under the front passenger footwell.

Sounds good on paper, and as soon as we'll get to drive the new Mazda MX-5, we'll confirm or infirm if Bose brought the real deal to the party.
