While most major Japanese automakers are already selling hybrid vehicles, Mazda says the eco-friendly technology can wait for a few more years, especially on the European market.
Speaking to AOL, a Mazda spokesman said the company is looking maintain its focus on gasoline and diesel engines, with no hybrid and electric vehicles to be launched anytime soon. The statement below comes after Mazda confirmed a hybrid version of the new Mazda3 will be launched in Japan.
"While downsizing can be an effective method for reducing emissions, adding an electric boost often merely offsets the loss in power from reduced displacement," the Mazda R&D spokesman explained. "We want to make sure our engines are optimally designed, to make better effect of the benefits of combined battery power."
All told, Mazda will concentrate its efforts on the SkyActiv technology which allows the company to offer engine with a larger capacity but with lower CO2 emissions and better fuel efficiency.
