Back in 2015, at that year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Japanese carmaker Mazda unveiled the RX-Vision, a stunning piece of engineering that made use of the revolutionary Skyactiv-R rotary engine. Five years have passed since then, and here comes the first real development on the RX-Vision front.
The concept was just that, and like many others of its kind is yet to produce a production version. But that doesn’t mean we cannot enjoy what the vehicle has to offer in some other way.

PS4 owners that like to play Gran Turismo Sport are in for a surprise as of today, May 22: a car based on the concept, called RX-Vision GT3, can be downloaded and taken to the track in the FIA certified Gran Turismo Championship for the 2020 season.

The virtual incarnation of the concept does come with some modifications needed to comply with both GT3 regulations and Gran Turismo’s Gr.3 category. Compared to its real-life self, it is wider, lower and shorter, and that is clearly visible in the extensive gallery featured above.

The virtual racer also comes with larger wheel arches, and has the required front and rear spoilers, and a rear diffuser to help generate the needed downforce.

Mazda hid a virtual Skyactiv-R engine in such a way as to achieve a 48:52 front-rear weight distribution, all cramped under that giant hood with a large air outlet . The engine is good for 570 ps, all of them virtual of course.

As for the reasons that led to the release of the RX-Vision in the game – something we knew was coming since the end of last year – the carmaker says it “is aiming to strengthen its fan base by introducing the pleasure of competitive driving to a wider range of people who love Digital Motor Sport.”

Considering parts of the world are still in lockdown with nothing better to do, we can only welcome the addition.
