As we learned earlier in 2023, Maserati will no longer offer its Ferrari-developed, twin-turbo V8 engine in 2024. The Italian has now confirmed once again that the long-running F136 lump is going into the history books with two special-edition models: the Ghibli 334 Ultima and Levante V8 Ultima. Both make their public debut at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Ghibli has been around since 2013, but it spent most of these years in showrooms with gasoline and diesel V6 units under the hood. The twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V8 was introduced in 2020 in the Ghibli Trofeo, which came with 572 horsepower and 538 pound-feet (729 Nm) of torque on tap.
The 334 Ultima flaunts the exact version of the F136 mill, according to the Italian automaker, but it brags about a higher top speed. Maserati claims that 334 denotes the sedan's top speed in kph (208 mph), which means that the Ultima boasts an extra eight kph (five mph) over the Trofeo, rated at 326 kph (203 mph).
There's no specific info on what changed under the hood to achieve a slightly higher top speed, but Maserati says the Ghibli 334 Ultima is the fastest sedan in the world with an internal combustion engine. That's precisely one kph (0.6 mph) more than the previous record holder, the W12-powered Bentley Flying Spur Speed. Impressive!
What else makes the 334 Ultima special? Well, Maserati wasn't exactly generous with the details, but the photos show a few extra bits inside the cabin. Highlights include two-tone seats in leather and Alcantara and "334" stitching on the headrests. The same number is printed in red on the front fenders.
The second special-edition model, the Levante V8 Ultima, comes with similar goodies. However, the "334" decals and headrest stitching are replaced by "V8 Ultima." The seats are also wrapped in black and saddle brown materials for a sporty yet classy look. The V8 Ultima also cranks out 572 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of twist, but it's not faster than the similarly-equipped Trofeo. Even so, it's no slouch at 300 kph (186 mph).
Both cars will be displayed in the First Glance Paddock, while the Ghibli 334 Ultima will also roar up the hill during the event. Production and pricing details aren't available as of this writing. However, expect these Ultima models to be the most expensive iterations of their respective lineups.

The GranTurismo Trofeo, powered by a V6 Nettuno engine with a pre-chamber combustion system and twin spark plugs derived from Formula 1, will also participate in the hillclimb race. The Italians will also showcase the all-electric GranTurismo Folgore, Grecale Folgore, and the MC20 Cielo.
