He doesn’t get any points for creativity: one burglar hit up a home in Waterboro, Maine and was found by the victim in front of the TV, eating a sandwich. He then managed to get his victim to drive him to another house, by telling him a tall story that the victim found very convincing.
On Sunday morning, police were called to the house in question. The victim had returned home after dropping the burglar off to another house, at his request. It was only then that the victim realized he’d been duped and many of his belongings had been stolen, and that the suspect had broken in through the back door.
The suspect was later identified as Derek Tarbox, a 35-year-old man with priors, WCSH-TV reports. When the victim arrived home, he found Tarbox watching television and eating a sandwich. He had also taken a shower and dressed in his victim’s clothes. Talk about feeling yourself at home in another person’s house.
When questioned about his motives there, Tarbox professed to be shocked that he wasn’t at the right house. He claimed he thought it belonged to a friend’s, who had left the front door open for him. The victim didn’t realize that himself had just entered through the front door and it had been locked.
The police apprehended Tarbox at the house his victim had dropped him off. He was arrested and charged with “Class B Burglary (Bail is $5000), two counts of Unauthorized Use of Property (Bail $500.00 each), Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Accident (Bail $500.00), Failure to report an Accident by Quickest Means (Bail $500.00), and Theft by Unauthorized Taking (E) (Bail $1000.00),” the report notes.
“Additionally, sheriff’s deputies, working with Maine State Police, found that Tarbox had stolen a vehicle in Portland and ran out of gas in Hollis, where he stole another vehicle and drove it to Bennet Hill Road where he went off the road and crashed it in the woods. Tarbox then walked to the caller’s home,” notes the same media outlet.
Tarbox has been arraigned and is due back in court in March.
