The tuning world lost an icon at the end of last week, after Richard Hamann, the man behind the legendary name Hamman passed away, aged 53, after battling lung cancer for years. His passing was quietly announced on Hamman's official website on March 17 and only now became public.
“Richard Hamann passed away after a severe illness. Owing him deep respect and gratitude, his untimely death is an enormous loss for us,” the company which he founded said in the short statement released over the weekend. “The team of Hamman Motorsport will always honour his memory and continues to run the business according to his wishes.”
Hamman's passion for cars dates way back to the early years of his life, when he was an active racer on the motorports scene. He was on the starting grid of several competitions, including Gruppe C, DTM and Formula 3, being there for the green light nearly 700 times. On about 300 occasions, he managed to finish in the top three. He also won 100 of the races he attended.
Hamann Motorsports, the company that is currently on everybody's lips at various auto and tuning shows around the world, was founded in 1986. The company started out by modifying German-made cars, the first project being a tweaked version of a BMW M3.
As their experience grew, the guys from Hamman started playing with other models as like, modifying from top to bottom and inside out pretty much every nameplate you can think of. The latest products, and probably the last Richard Hamman got to see, was the Hawk and Guardian, presented earlier this month at the Geneva Auto Show.
