Standard housing can bury us in bills and debt, it keeps us stuck in one place and is often far from what our ideal image would look like. For some folks, it’s even worse because it can literally make them ill. Tiny houses come to the rescue – these extremely versatile alternative dwellings can be built as safe havens in the true sense of the word.
We're fascinated by the stunning versatility of tiny houses on wheels in terms of design and style. There's always a new layout to discover, an ingenious hack, or an interesting approach to interior design. But nothing is more important than health, and for some people, the way a house is built can literally support their wellbeing.

An ailment known as "advanced electro-sensitivity and severe multiple chemical sensitivity" (MCS) can make living in a conventional house impossible. Metal becomes the great enemy, and every chemical can turn out to be dangerous. On the other hand, it's almost impossible to imagine any type of modern house that's supposed to be durable and solid being built with no metal.

The Bamboo tiny house designed and built in Catalonia, Spain, proves it's possible. It's not 100% metal-free, but it does cut the use of metal by 90%, which is remarkable. You can see straight away the beautiful bamboo roof, making it look more like a traditional abode from an exotic place. Behind this unique roof, every detail was carefully chosen and integrated, beginning with wooden nails and screws and ending with a removable trailer.

Inside, everything is made of wood. The walls, the floor, and the furniture are all made from poplar or paulownia. The home does come with electricity and internet connectivity, but all the cables are shielded and grounded.

The Bamboo Tiny House displays a wonderful simplicity aimed at healthy living above all. Its walls are breathable. Insulation is ensured only through the use of natural materials. Chemical finishes are replaced by linseed oil treatments. A wide door and multiple large windows bring in the benefits of sunshine and fresh air.

Despite the rustic appearance, this home is equipped with all the basics in terms of appliances. It's also partly autonomous. It was equipped with a solar power system, a large-capacity (400 liters/105 gallons) water tank, and a dry, eco-friendly toilet.

Phytofiltration becomes particularly important for a home like the Bamboo Tiny House. Plant roots, shoots, and seedlings can effectively remove contaminants from water, including heavy metals that are dangerous for people suffering from MCS.

The passionate team at Serena.House built this unique home on wheels for a customer named Marta, who was looking for a healthy, supportive living space. Tiny houses have the huge advantage of allowing extreme customization. Bamboo is Marta's perfect home, where she can feel safe from any unwanted chemical or electric waves. Plus, the mobility factor allowed her to settle in an area that was suitable for her sensitivities.

The Bamboo tiny house is only 6.5 meters long (21.3 feet) and can comfortably accommodate two people at most. One end of the house can be configured as a main floor bedroom with enough space for a double bed.

It's a highly customized version of the brand's Getaway format. As its name suggests, the Getaway was originally designed as a vacation rental house for tourism. The simple, open-plan layout is perfect for short-term getaways and explorations and can welcome just one or two people.

Adding a charming outside deck with a pergola is always a good idea for increasing overall spaciousness and connecting more with nature. As for the price, this format starts at less than €44,000.

Serena. Houses's portfolio also includes a bigger version of the Getaway, called Getaway+, which would be suitable for year-round housing. The Penates is probably its most popular platform, spacious enough for up to six people and perfectly equipped for a family lifestyle. Last but not least, the Mini is an adorable 4-meter (13 feet) mobile studio that can be used as anything from a guest house to a music studio or home office.

This pioneering tiny house builder started out with a bang. Back in 2016, it was the first to build an off-grid tiny house in France. One year later, it won the Loire Atlantique award for Sustainable Tourism in the "Environmental Preservation" category. In 2018, it hit another milestone with the construction of the first off-grid tiny house in Spain. By 2020, more than 500 people have spent a night inside a Serena.House eco-friendly tiny home.

Currently operating in Catalonia, near Barcelona, Serena.House is one of the biggest promoters of alternative housing. Special projects like the Bamboo Tiny House prove that tiny living is much more than an affordable and more practical alternative; it's part of a holistic way of life where health for people and the environment becomes the foundation.
