Lotus to Launch V6-powered Exige in 2012

Lotus has a lot to think about and not a lot to turn its thoughts into reality. The arrival of the Elise and Exige ‘Final Editions’ for the US market heralds the end of production, leaving only the Evora to bring sales.

This state isn’t going to last forever, as there’s talk of a new product, and it’s not one of those concepts we saw in Paris last year. The little Exige looks like the Lotus supercar of the future... from 10 years ago, but we love it a lot for its honest performance. The British sportscar maker is reportedly working on a redesigned version of the car that might arrive next year.

What’s more, according to Autocar, it won’t bring the usual straight-four, but the Evora’s 3.5-liter V6. If this was BMW we were talking about market differentiation between the two cars would have been a huge problem, but the Hethel is in such a need for a new car that it really doesn’t matter.

Until the new model arrives, the Exige won’t have been produced for the European market since December 2010, as its 1.8-liter from Toyota is unfit for service here due to its emissions.

The revamped sportscar will end up looking a bit like old Lancia Stratos due to a wider track that’s needed to accommodate the V6 block. When it comes to actual styling, more angular lines are on the menu, in order to prepare customers for the upcoming linup that will start with the Esprit in 2013.

Equipping the Exige with the Evora’s V6 will make it not only more powerful, as a full 276 hp and 252 lb-ft (342 Nm) is to be provided to the rear wheels, but also more marketable. The Exige could be provided for the first time with an automatic gearbox.
