As some of you might have heard already, Toyota and BMW has signed an agreement under which the Japanese manufacturer will provide hybrid tech, while BMW will offer up its diesels, most notably the 1.6 and 2.0-liter units, starting in 2014.
But it seems there’s a bit of a snag, since BMW is battling to take the title of biggest luxury carmaker in America from Lexus, something it should achieve this year. And Lexus having a 184 horsepower oil-burner to slap onto the IS or GS wouldn’t exactly help the Bavarian cause, so no car wearing the “L” badge will get a BMW engine.
''The agreement with BMW does not include any supply of BMW engines to Lexus,'' Toyota Europe representative Etienne Plas told Autonews Europe.
So Lexus will solder on by advancing hybrid and plug-in tech in the luxury business, while Toyota will focus on getting the sales it ca with the new diesels.
