The Lexus RX will soon gain a plug-in hybrid version, rounding up the electrified powertrain options for the mid-size luxury crossover. The RX 450h+ has a starting MSRP of $70,080, making it the most expensive variant in the RX lineup.
Lexus launched the all-new RX mid-size luxury SUV last September on the new GA-K architecture. A range of ICE and hybrid powertrains was available at launch, starting with the 2.4-liter turbo gasoline engine powering the RX 350. The new powerplant delivers 275 horsepower and has a flat torque curve for impressive performance. The starting price was $49,150 for the FWD variant.
The RX 350h hybrid variant, with an MSRP of $50,750, relies on a 2.5-liter engine running on the Atkinson cycle for better efficiency. Together with the electric motor, it offers a total system power of 246 horsepower, making it more like an RX 300h. Finally, the sporty RX 500h leverages the 2.4-liter turbo engine performance to squeeze 366 horsepower from its hybrid powertrain. Lexus claims an impressive 0-60 time of 5.9 seconds and asks over $63,000 for the F Sport Performance variant.
If you thought that was the top-of-the-line model, you were wrong. Lexus promised that a plug-in hybrid powertrain would also be offered, and it is now closer to starting deliveries. Although full technical details are still unavailable, the pricing puts the RX 450h+ above the 500h, with a rather bold starting price of $70,080. The Lexus RX 450h+ was initially planned to start production "by the end of 2022" but has been delayed and is now slated to arrive by the end of this year.
Like the RX 350h, the plug-in hybrid also relies on the 2.5-liter engine in a configuration delivering a total of 304 horsepower. This is identical to the Lexus NX 450h+, which shares the same underpinnings. Lexus claims a manufacturer-estimated combined 83 MPGe rating, with up to 35 miles (56 km) driving range on electric power only. The RX 450h+ is only a tad slower than the 500h hybrid, with a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds. This is also 0.2 seconds slower than the NX 450h+, which was expected, considering that the RX is heavier.
The Lexus RX 450h+ supports Level-1 charging at 3.3 kW for home charging, and it includes an onboard AC charger with double the power. This can be put to good work on a Level-2 240-volt outlet, shortening the charging time to about two and a half hours. There's no support for DC fast charging.
The RX 450h+ launches with the Luxury trim as the base variant, which partly explains the high price. It includes all the luxury goodies you'd expect from a Lexus, starting with comfort and convenience features and going wild with the safety features and driver-assistance systems.
