Previously based on the K platform, the Highlander’s luxury-oriented sibling has finally switched to the GA-K platform for 2023. The ground-up redesign also comes with a plethora of powertrain options in the U.S., starting with the 2.4-liter turbo of the 350.

Codenamed T24A-FTS, the four-cylinder lump develops 275 horsepower and 317 pound-foot (430 Nm) of torque. Gifted with a center injection system that enables more stable combustion, the force-fed mill further sweetens the deal with a continuously variable capacity oil pump that modifies the discharge volume based on running conditions. An eight-speed automatic transmission also needs to be mentioned, along with an electronically controlled full-time AWD that varies driving force distribution from 75:25 to 50:50.

Front-wheel drive is standard in the United States. Next up, the 350h features a hybrid motor and a 2.5-liter engine that runs the Atkinson cycle for better efficiency. The series-parallel hybrid system puts out 246 horsepower and 233 pound-foot (316 Nm) on full song, and the 216-cell battery is located below the rear seat. E-Four AWD is standard in the 350h, consisting of an electric motor that drives the rear axles under acceleration and in low-grip driving conditions.

To be offered later in the model year, the 450h+ features a plus after the h because it’s a plug-in hybrid. The first-ever RX with a plug-in powertrain combines the aforementioned 2.5-liter Atkinson engine with the E-Four AWD system and an 18.1-kWh lithium-ion pack.

The crème de la crème is the 500h F Sport Performance AWD, which lives up to its promise of performance with 366 horsepower and 406 pound-foot (550 Nm). Its powertrain combines the 2.4-liter turbo of the 350 with a six-speed automatic, an electric motor, and a second electric motor out back. The rear unit develops 80 kW.

To be manufactured by Toyota in Canada and in Japan, the all-new RX will go on sale by the end of 2022. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price will be announced closer to the on-sale date.
