Lexus CT 200h Allows Drivers to Choose Their Driving Moods

While orders for Lexus’ CT 200h model are set to begin in Europe this autumn, the carmaker has just revealed further interesting details of its new small luxury hybrid car. For instance, the CT 200h will offer two different driving “moods” – Dynamic and Relaxing – according to the driver’s choice of selectable drive modes for the full hybrid system.

The power unit comprises a 1.8-litre VVT-i petrol engine, an electric motor and an electrically controlled continuously variable transmission (E-CVT).

“EV (electric vehicle), ECO and NORMAL modes place the emphasis on ride comfort, smooth acceleration and low NVH levels in the cabin for a relaxing drive,” a company statement reads.

Being a full hybrid, CT 200h can operate automatically in EV mode, switching off the petrol engine and running on its electric motor alone, at speeds of up to 30 mph. This mode is ideal for use in slow urban traffic, it can reduce tailpipe emissions to zero, with driving range determined by the level of battery charge and local conditions. The EV mode can also be selected manually by the driver.

Switching to ECO mode will have the car’s systems automatically adjusted to deliver maximum efficiency. Throttle responses are moderated when the driver presses hard on the accelerator and air conditioning performance is altered to reduce its impact on fuel consumption.

SPORT mode increases the vehicle’s dynamics, power delivery from the electric motor and maximising performance. The look of the instrument panel also changes to reflect the move to more dynamic performance: the instrument backlighting automatically shifts from hybrid blue to red and the hybrid power meter is replaced by a tachometer display.

Pricing details of the CT 200h will be announced by Lexus at the upcoming auto show in Paris on September 30.

autoevolution will be attending the 2010 Paris Auto Show, so stay tuned for some real up close and personal shots of the vehicles, as well as for first-hand details of the motorized contraptions presented at the event.
