Toyota has made an announcement saying it will introduce its Lexus luxury brand in India by 2013. The decision came after the automaker looked at the growing Asian market for years and came to a conclusion there is enough demand to create a presence for itself there.
The first models to be introduced will be the LS saloon and the RX line of SUVs, followed by the new GS. These will be complete imports at first, though they are considering local assembly if demand is there.
The main problem faced by the manufacturer will not be to create brand awareness, but to offer competitively priced cars.
“We have been watching India with keen interest and we are happy to announce that we will bring Lexus to India in 2013” confirmed Yukitoshi Funo, executive vice-president of Toyota Motor Corporation. “We would rather have a few, quality dealerships than a large number of mediocre outlets.”
