Hoverboards might be the next big thing after drones, but a lot of engineering and development needs to be performed in order to perfect the technology. However, Lexus here seem equally adept at building cars but also flying boards.
We all know their cars, some even love them, but this Lexus product has nothing to do with riding on four wheels, with actual contact with the ground. That being said, get ready to find out more about one of the most advanced hoverboards the world has seen.
It looks like a flat tanning booth, but there's enough science in it to please even the most conspicuous scientist. For the hoverboard, the Lexus project team used magnetic levitation 'magic' with liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets to create a frictionless movement like we used to see in sci-fi movies.
After a closer look, you can spot the traditional Lexus spindle grille decorating the hoverboard's front end. Also, some of the same materials used for Lexus models were employed here as well, together with natural elements like bamboo.
“At Lexus we constantly challenge ourselves and our partners to push the boundaries of what is possible. That determination, combined with our passion and expertise for design and innovation, is what led us to take on the Hoverboard project. It’s the perfect example of the amazing things that can be achieved when you combine technology, design and imagination,” said Mark Templin, Executive Vice President, Lexus International.
As good as this may sound, the hoverboard has a significant and disappointing drawback. Because this is just a prototype, the futuristic flying gizmo is not for sale. Tests are currently underway in Barcelona, but you can follow the project on Twitter using the official hashtags #LexusHover and #AmazinginMotion.
