A 21-year-old learner driver led police on a high speed chase through villages in Cambridgeshire, UK, but still managed to get away with a mere slap on the wrist, avoiding jail time.
The incident occurred last January, but Cambridgeshire Police have released footage of it just now, after Daniel Avory’s trial has come to an end. You will also find it at the bottom of the page.
Avory pleaded guilty to reckless driving and perversion of justice, but he only got a driving ban and community work, and won’t serve a day in jail despite the severity of his deed, Cambridge News reports.
On the day in question, Avory was driving his Vauxhall Astra in Benwick, when officers in a patrol car traveling in the opposite direction realized that the car had no insurance. They initiated a traffic stop and summoned the driver to pull over.
Avory refused to do that. What followed next, as evidenced by the dashcam footage shot by the officers, was a chase that reached 113mph at times, saw Avory drive the wrong way, weaving in and out of traffic and nearly causing dozens of accidents. The closest call came when he swiped a truck with his wing mirror.
“Officers were eventually forced to call off the pursuit due to public safety concerns,” Cambridge News notes. “But they were able to catch up with Avory after they visited the vehicle’s registered address in Serjeants Close, Ramsey the following day and found the damaged vehicle parked outside.”
At the end of the trial, Avory was sentenced to a suspended 15-month jail sentence, 150 hours of unpaid work and a 3-year driving ban.
“Avory’s driving was reckless and he’s lucky no one was hurt as a result,” PC Ian Swales told the court during the trial. “He showed no regard to other road users and his sentence reflects how seriously we and the courts take driving offenses.”
