A high-speed chase in the Long Beach area ended predictably with the driver and another suspect in custody, but not after a spectacular crash caused by a PIT maneuver.
The Pursuit Intervention Technique (or PIT) maneuver is when police force the driver of a fleeing car to lose control of the vehicle by hitting it from the back or the side. The driver then loses control and the chase ends – for better or for worse for the suspect.
In this particular case, the driver, who was trying to escape police in a truck packed with home appliances, crashed into the median, which sent the truck flying through the air before it came to a stop on its side. Luckily for the driver, he wasn’t hurt – or, at least, he wasn’t hurt so badly as to impede him from running on foot.
“The pursuit apparently began in the Long Beach area, before the driver of the truck ended up in Buena Park, and California Highway Patrol took over the chase,” KTLA says.
“The truck had large items in the back as the suspect was driving on the wrong side of the road in Westminster, aerial video showed. The driver was driving erratically through intersections, weaving in and out of traffic,” the report notes.
After the crash, the driver emerged and tried to escape on foot. Apparently, he was as bad a runner as he was a driver, because he was caught by police in the parking lot of a nearby supermarket, where he was subdued with a stunt gun. The report adds that another suspect was placed into police custody after the chase.
Police are still working on the charges that will be brought against both, so they remain in custody. No one else was hurt in the car chase.
