A car thief thought he could maybe escape the cops on foot, when he saw he couldn’t do so in the car he had just stolen. His bad luck had it so that he ended up pinned under the vehicle.
Isaiah John Gellatly, from Happy Valley, Oregon, was seen lurking around parked cars by residents, ABC News reports. When police were alerted of a car robbery in progress, they spotted him inside a 1998 Honda Accord, lying back in the fully reclined seat.
He wasn’t asleep: he was merely trying to escape the cops. Seeing the flashing sirens made him understand that he had been spotted, so he pulled his seat back up and drove away. After a short but intense chase, police deployed spiked strips and one of the wheels of the car was punctured.
“He repeatedly blew through stop signs and crossed over into the opposing lane of traffic during the high-speed pursuit,” a police statement says, adding that Gellatly began having issues controlling the car afterwards.
Perhaps understanding that the chase was about to end soon and he would not like the outcome, the suspect then tried to jump out of the still-moving car and make his way on foot. He miscalculated most of his motions and he ended up with his leg pinned under the wheel of the car, as the vehicle crashed into a wall and a tree.
He “suffered a broken leg in the high-speed chase in Happy Valley, Oregon, police said. After being treated at a hospital, he was booked at the Clackamas County Jail,” the ABC report notes. He’s been arrested on “suspicion of attempting to elude police, reckless driving, unlawful entry into a motor vehicle and theft.”
