Jaguar Land Rover North America has issued a safety recall comprising 58,729 units of the 2018 to 2022 model year Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. More specifically, the Brits have recalled SUVs equipped with the Surround Camera System.
Back in January 2023, the automaker started investigating allegations relating to rearview camera issues due to an increasing number of reports. As of January 2024, the automaker is aware of 210 field reports in the US alone. Jaguar Land Rover started testing for water ingress and corrosion exposure risks in July 2023, yet the final results were reviewed by the Product Safety and Compliance Committee earlier this month.

PSCC progressed this matter to the Recall Determination Committee on January 9, with the RDC determining that recall is necessary. In addition to the rearview camera image not being displayed on the infotainment system's touchscreen, which goes against the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard 111, no camera image increases the risk of a crash/injury.

The rearview camera may operate intermittently or give up the ghost completely as a result of water getting into the camera housing. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a design issue with the camera seal allows water to get into the housing.

On February 1, dealers nationwide will be instructed to remove the rearview camera of Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles equipped with the Surround Camera System. If the camera seems fine, only the seal will be replaced. In case of any kind of damage caused by water, the camera will be replaced. Vehicles that require new cameras will be submitted to a 10-minute calibration drive.

Owner notifications will be mailed no later than March 8. In the meantime, owners can easily determine whether their SUVs are recalled or not by running the 17-character VIN on the NHTSA's website. JLR's part number for the suspect camera is JPLA-19H422-AB, and the supplier is listed as being Continental Teves.

Named after German auto industry entrepreneur Alfred Teves, this company belongs to the Chassis & Safety division of German automotive colossus Continental AG. Based in Hanover, the multinational giant further comprises the ADAS (make that Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), ContiTech (industrial solutions, products, and systems), Powertrain, Tires, and Interior divisions.

Regarding the recalled vehicles, Jaguar Land Rover North America lists the 2018 – 2022 Land Rover Range Rover with production dates of July 5, 2017 through December 10, 2021. As for the 2018 – 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport, production dates range between May 25, 2017 and April 28, 2022.

Both models were redesigned from the ground up on the MLA-Flex platform, which supports full electrification. JLR opened the pre-orders for the Range Rover EV in December 2023, but it's not clear whether deliveries will start this year or in 2025.
