Lamborghini LM00X SUV a Reality?

Lamborghini is reportedly grappling with the creation of a successor for the legendary LM-002 off-roader from the 1980s. The new Lambo should take the form of a compact SUV with sportscar lines.

According to sources quoted by British magazine AutoExpress, the Sant'Agata Bolognese performance machine will be built in collaboration with Porsche’s Cajun. Both will share the platform that underpins the current quattro Audi Q5. The original LM-002 was purpose-made for military use and was powered by a meaty V12 engine from the Countach. This will not be the case for the mini-SUV, dubbed LM00X, as it will receive a 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V8 imported from next year’s Audi S7.

The powerplant is expected to produce in excess of 550 hp, good for a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) time in the region of 4 seconds. The LM00X (not very inspiring name is it?) promises to keep the aggressive lines of a Lamborghini and is expected to come in two door form, just like the Cajun.

Weight will undoubtedly be kept to a minimum using the same carbon fiber improvements seen on the Sesto Elemento concept shown at the Paris Motor Show. The car is expected to compete in the Dakar Rally, so it's not all show and no go.

The Lamborghini LM00X will most likely debut in 2012 at prices in the EUR120,000 (aprox. $165,000) range. With no direct competition from any other supercar makers, it should see great sales figures.

What has been seen can never be unseen, so we expect the Italians to deliver this project, even though it is a dilution of the famous badge.
