AutoVAZ has announced that it will be recalling 45,348 Lada Grantas, due to a potential fault with the cars’ airbag. It affects car built between the end of May and September of 2012, yet with the steady production volume increase, the specified number of cars represents 40% of the entire production run, since the model was introduced, in December of last year.
Apparently, the airbag control unit, made in Germany by a Japanese company called Takata, may malfunction, and the airbag may not deploy in the even of a crash. All of the recalled cars will have the control module checked, and reprogrammed if necessary.

Being a safety-related recall, it will be taken very seriously, and will dent the automaker’s newfound brand image as a manufacturer of cost-effective reliable cars, which have been developed in collaboration with Renault, a manufacturer which puts safety close to the very top of the list of priorities.

This is now the second recall issued by by AutoVAZ this year alone, the first one being a fuel system-related recall, which affected 100,000 Granta and Kalina models.
