Christian von Koenigsegg, CEO of Koenigsegg, gave his opinion on future engines architecture recently. It seems like the good old camshaft is about to become a museum piece.
Today, almost every engine uses one or two camshafts to operate the intake and exhaust valves at the exact specified time, in order to make the “suck-squeeze-bang-blow” cycle possible. However, according to Mr. Christian, this method is rather old, as his company is testing for some time a new type of cam-less engine. And he is not the only one doing this... Fiat is also developing an electro-hydraulic variable valve actuation for the MultiAir engines.
Von Koenigsegg gives about ten years for the classic camshaft before it will be replaced by newer technologies. We think it is a bit harsh, judging that this kind of systems are more expensive to build and maintain. Yes, maybe they can be used on supercars and such, but for the everyday city box, the good old fashion way will still be right way.
